# Practice questions with worked solutions for Australian students

Practice questions are only useful when they tell you something. These pages give you a short explanation of a topic, one example worked all the way through, and then five questions you answer on the page — each of which shows you the method as soon as you commit to an answer, whether you were right or wrong. Nothing is recorded, nothing is scored against you, and no account is needed.

1

## Diagnose before drilling

The first session finds what is actually breaking down — missing content, a weak method, or lost confidence — because practising the wrong thing wastes a term.

2

## Plan to the real calendar

Lessons aim at the student's next school task — a SAC, assessment, trial, NAPLAN window or exam block — not a generic syllabus order.

3

## Practise under matching conditions

Timed where the task is timed, written where it is written, with the calculator and formula rules the real assessment uses.

4

## Report so parents can see it

After lessons, parents get plain-language notes: what was covered, what improved, and the next piece of work — no jargon, no guesswork.

## Why the working matters more than the score

A student who scores four out of five and never sees why the fifth was wrong has learned almost nothing from the exercise. Worse, a student who guessed two of the four correct answers now has a score that flatters them and hides the gap. Every question on these pages shows its method after you answer, so the feedback is about the reasoning rather than the tally.

That is also why we do not hide the working behind a sign-up. A parent checking whether their child understands index laws before Thursday's test needs the answer now, not after creating an account and confirming an email address. If the explanation helps and you want a tutor to take it further, the enquiry form is at the bottom of every page.

The questions are deliberately the ones students get wrong for a reason rather than by carelessness. Subtracting instead of adding when Pythagoras gives you the hypotenuse, negating instead of inverting a negative index, retelling the plot instead of analysing it — these are patterns, and naming the pattern is what stops it recurring.

## How these pages fit the Australian Curriculum

Each topic lists the Australian Curriculum v9.0 content descriptors it maps to, so you can see the link between a practice set and what the school is actually teaching that term. The descriptors are ACARA's own identifiers, which means you can search them against your child's reporting or the school's scope and sequence document.

The year bands on each page are indicative rather than fixed. Schools sequence topics differently, and states differ again at senior level, so a topic marked Years 8 to 9 may appear earlier in an extension class or later in a standard one. Use the descriptor rather than the year band if you want to check exactly where a topic sits.

## Choosing the right topic to start with

The most useful starting point is rarely the topic a student is currently struggling with in class. If Year 10 quadratics are going badly, the underlying problem is often index laws or negative numbers from two years earlier, and drilling quadratics will keep producing the same wrong answers for reasons that never surface.

A practical approach is to start one topic below where the trouble is showing. If that set goes smoothly, the gap is genuinely in the current work and you can move up with confidence. If it does not, you have found the actual issue in ten minutes rather than after a term of frustration.

For students who are coping but want to get ahead, the reverse applies: pick the topic the class is about to start. Arriving at a new unit having already seen the method once changes the experience of the first lesson entirely, because the student is consolidating rather than meeting it cold.

## What these pages deliberately do not do

There is no timer, no leaderboard and no streak. Those mechanics increase time on page, which is useful to us and not to the student, and they turn a diagnostic exercise into a performance one. A student who is anxious about mathematics does not need a countdown clock attached to it.

There is also no adaptive sequencing that decides what a student should see next. Adaptive systems work well at scale and badly at the point where a student has a specific misunderstanding, because they infer from answer patterns rather than from asking. That inference is what a tutor does better than software.

## Using practice as revision rather than as a test

The most effective way to use these sets is spaced out. Working through one topic on Monday and revisiting it on Thursday produces markedly better retention than doing the same total number of questions in a single sitting, because the effort of recalling something you have partly forgotten is what strengthens the memory.

Reading the working on questions you answered correctly is worth the extra minute. Students often arrive at a right answer by a longer route or by recognising the shape of the question rather than the underlying method, and the difference shows up under exam pressure when the question is phrased unfamiliarly.

If a topic goes badly, the useful next step is usually one level down rather than more of the same. A student who cannot solve simultaneous equations often has an issue with substitution or with negative numbers rather than with the method itself, and repeating the same set will not surface that.

Common questions

## What families ask about this

### Are these practice questions free?

Yes. Every question, every answer and every worked solution on these pages is available without an account, a payment or an email address. We ask for details only if you choose to enquire about a tutor, and the first tutoring lesson itself is also free.

### Do you record my child's answers or score?

No. The marking happens entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to us or stored anywhere. Refreshing the page clears the answers, which also means you can hand the same set to a sibling without any history carrying across.

### How many questions are in each practice set?

Five per topic, each with a full worked solution. We chose depth over volume deliberately: five questions that each teach a distinct method are more useful in ten minutes than thirty questions drilling the same step repeatedly.

### Can these replace a tutor?

For a student who is close and just needs reminding, often yes. What a practice set cannot do is notice that a student is stuck on a prerequisite from two years earlier, ask the question that reveals it, or adjust on the spot — which is what a tutor is for.

### Can I print these for a class or a study group?

Yes, the pages print from the browser and teachers are welcome to use them with a class. We ask only that the pages are not republished elsewhere as your own, since the questions and worked solutions were written for these pages specifically.

### How often are new topics added?

New topics go up as they are written, prioritised by what students most often arrive stuck on rather than by search volume. If there is a topic your child needs that is not here yet, the enquiry form on any page reaches us and requests genuinely influence the order.

### Which year levels are these suitable for?

The topics currently span roughly Years 7 to 12, and each page states its own year band and the Australian Curriculum descriptors it maps to. Because schools sequence content differently, treat the year band as a guide and the descriptor as the precise answer.

## What sessions cost

Every year level has a published per-session rate in AUD, with no lock-in contract.

Year 1$12

AUD per session

Year 7$18

AUD per session

Year 12$26

AUD per session

Booking a block reduces the per-session rate: 5% from 8 sessions, 8% from 12 sessions, 12% from 15 sessions, 15% from 20 sessions. At 12 sessions, Year 1 works out to $11.04 per session. The first lesson is free and there is no lock-in contract.

[See the full rate card](https://nobleeducators.com/australia#pricing)

## How that compares

Online 1-on-1, a private in-person tutor and a tutoring centre are genuinely different products, and the cheapest is not automatically the right one. These are the typical advertised rates for each in Australia.

| Option | Typical cost per session | Format |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Noble Educators | $12–$34 | 1-on-1, live |
| Private in-person tutor | $40–$100 | 1-on-1, in person |
| Tutoring centre | $45–$90 | Small group, sometimes 1-on-1 |
| Online marketplace tutor | $30–$70 | 1-on-1, live |

Ranges describe typical advertised rates for each type of tutoring in Australia and are provided as general guidance only. They are not quotes from specific providers, and actual prices vary by tutor, year level, subject, location and session length. Compare current published pricing directly before deciding.

For parents

## Clarity before you book, visibility after every lesson.

## What to share before the first lesson

The tutor match works from evidence, not a job title. Anything from the list below gives the first session a concrete starting point instead of a cold diagnostic.

- The most recent school report or assessment result
- The current task sheet, assessment notice or study design topic
- Any teacher feedback, and the topic where confidence broke

Send it through the enquiry form

## What you will see after every lesson

Progress a parent cannot see is progress they cannot support. Reporting is part of the service, not an add-on you have to chase.

- What the lesson covered and what changed, in plain language
- The next piece of practice and why it comes next
- A direct line to ask questions between lessons
