# Ontario Curriculum Guide: Kindergarten to Grade 12

Ontario is distinctive because elementary curriculum language changes into a course-code system in secondary school, where MHF4U, MCV4U, MDM4U and ICS4U quickly tell a tutor what pathway the student is in.

How school is organised

## What families should know before matching a tutor.

The Ontario Ministry of Education sets curriculum for publicly funded English-language, French-language, Catholic and public school systems. Elementary programming runs from Kindergarten through Grade 8, then students enter secondary school in Grade 9 and begin earning credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.

The transition into Grade 9 matters because families stop seeing only subject names and start seeing course codes. A student asking for help with Grade 9 de-streamed Mathematics, Grade 10 English or Grade 12 data management is not just asking for a generic lesson; they are naming a ministry course with specific expectations.

Ontario report cards separate achievement from learning skills and work habits. Parents should read both, because a student may understand a skill but lose marks through incomplete evidence, weak communication or late submissions in Grades 7 to 12.

Subject names parents search

## Same broad subjects, local curriculum language.

Also searched as: Ontario Language curriculum

### Language / English

Ontario elementary students see Language as the broad curriculum area for reading, writing, oral communication and media literacy. In secondary school, English courses are identified by grade and pathway codes, so support has to shift from broad literacy habits to the exact credit course and assessment task.

### Mathematics

Ontario Mathematics moves from number, algebra, data, spatial sense and financial literacy in the elementary grades into locally familiar high school courses such as MTH1W, MPM2D, MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U. The code matters because it encodes grade, pathway and destination.

### Science and Technology

Science and Technology is the elementary subject name, combining inquiry, engineering habits and scientific understanding. Secondary students then meet credit courses such as SNC1W, biology, chemistry and physics, each with a different vocabulary of labs, investigations and written explanations.

### Coding and Digital Literacy

Ontario includes coding expectations in the Mathematics curriculum and separate Computer Studies courses in secondary school. Families often search for coding, digital literacy or ICS support; the page treats those as related but not identical needs.

Assessments

## Ontario assessment context

Ontario's provincial assessment anchor is EQAO. Current public information identifies Grade 3 and Grade 6 assessments in reading, writing and mathematics, the Grade 9 Assessment of Mathematics, and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test.

The OSSLT measures whether students meet the minimum standard for literacy across subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy requirement is part of earning the OSSD, although schools can advise on permitted alternatives when a student needs another route.

EQAO results are useful context, not the whole student profile. A tutor should use them alongside class evidence, recent quizzes, writing samples and teacher feedback before deciding whether the problem is content knowledge, reading load, written expression or test stamina.

Graduation

## Senior years and Ontario course codes

Ontario high school course codes are a practical language. The first three letters identify the subject, the number identifies the grade, and the final letter signals the course type or destination. MDM4U, for example, is not just Grade 12 Math; it is a university-preparation data management course.

Parents often bring the code before they bring the course outline. That is enough to start a serious conversation because the code separates advanced functions from calculus, college mathematics, workplace preparation, biology, chemistry, physics and computer science.

The verified Ontario credential is the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Ministry policy identifies 30 credits, the provincial literacy requirement, online learning credits, and 40 hours of community involvement, with compulsory and optional credit mixes depending on the Grade 9 entry year.

Ontario has added a financial literacy graduation requirement for students entering Grade 9 in the 2025-26 school year and onward, applying from the 2026-27 school year. Families should check the student's cohort because graduation rules can depend on when secondary school began.

University admissions

## Ontario's top-6 average

Ontario universities typically calculate an admission average from six Grade 12 U or M courses, which is why the specific courses a student takes in Grade 12 — not just their overall Grade 12 workload — shapes which programs they can apply to. A tutor working from the actual course list, rather than a generic 'Grade 12 marks' request, can flag early whether a required prerequisite is missing.

Parent guidance

## What to share before the first session.

Ontario parents usually ask three practical questions: whether the student is in the right pathway, whether EQAO or OSSLT preparation is needed, and what the course code really means. Those questions should be answered before choosing practice material.

The most common transition points are Grade 6 to Grade 7, Grade 8 to de-streamed Grade 9, and Grade 11 to Grade 12 university or college preparation. At each point the student may need a different mix of skill repair, executive-function support and assessment practice.

A useful tutoring plan starts with the current unit, the course code or grade, and a recent sample of work. Then it maps the ministry expectation to a short practice sequence the student can actually complete between sessions.

Questions

## Ontario curriculum FAQ

What is the OSSLT in Ontario?

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is the usual way students meet the provincial literacy graduation requirement for the OSSD.

What does MDM4U mean?

MDM4U is Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management, a university-preparation Ontario course often used for programs that require statistics or data literacy.

How many credits are needed for the OSSD?

Ontario requires 30 credits, with compulsory and optional credits plus literacy, online learning and community involvement requirements.

Does EQAO affect graduation?

EQAO Grade 3, Grade 6 and Grade 9 assessments provide system and student information; the OSSLT literacy requirement is the assessment tied to graduation.

Is coding part of Ontario elementary school?

Yes, coding appears in elementary Mathematics expectations, while secondary Computer Studies courses use separate course codes.

Is MFM2P still offered after Ontario de-streamed Grade 9?

Yes. De-streaming applied to Grade 9 math, which became the single course MTH1W. Grade 10 kept its academic and applied split, so MFM2P (Foundations of Mathematics, Applied) is still active alongside MPM2D.

What's the difference between ICS3U and ICD2O?

ICD2O is the Grade 10 course, retitled Digital Technology and Innovations in the Changing World in a 2023 curriculum update. ICS3U is the separate Grade 11 course and kept its earlier Computer Science title — the two are not the same course at different grades.

Does Ontario use a top-6-average for university admission?

Ontario universities typically calculate an admission average from six Grade 12 U or M courses, so which courses a student takes in Grade 12 affects which programs they can apply to.
