## A closer look at Mathematics.

01

### What to focus on in Mathematics

An equation states that two quantities are equal. Apply the same operation to both sides. On a graph, the solution to a system is the point that satisfies both equations.

02

### Match practice to your actual course

MYP and Diploma Programme. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples linear equations and graphs; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

03

### Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is changing only one side of an equation or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your mathematics learning into practice.

Worked example · Linear equations and graphs

### Solve 3x + 7 = 22.

1. Subtract 7 from both sides: 3x = 15.
2. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5.
3. Check: 3(5) + 7 = 22.

Common mistakes to check

- Changing only one side of an equation
- Confusing the y-intercept with the gradient
