## A closer look at Statistics.

01

### What to focus on in Statistics

Start with the question and how the data were collected. Summaries describe a sample; a claim about a larger population also depends on sampling and variability.

02

### Match practice to your actual course

Levels 1, 2 and 3: confirm the exact subject and standard with your school. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples data, probability and interpretation; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

03

### Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is treating correlation as causation or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your statistics learning into practice.

Worked example · Data, probability and interpretation

### Find the mean and median of 2, 3, 4, 6, 10.

1. The total is 25 and there are 5 values, so mean = 5.
2. The ordered middle value is 4, so median = 4.
3. The high value of 10 pulls the mean above the median.

Common mistakes to check

- Treating correlation as causation
- Ignoring whether a sample represents the population
