Know what you’re preparing for

## Your test, in context.

### Who it’s for

Senior secondary students entering New Zealand Scholarship assessment in an offered subject.

### What to expect

Subject-specific Scholarship assessment, distinct from simply completing an NCEA Level 3 standard.

### Before you plan

Check subject entry and current assessment arrangements with the school. Scholarship and NCEA course preparation overlap in knowledge but have different assessment expectations.

Understanding before speed

## The skills to focus on.

01

### Deep subject understanding

Connect ideas across the subject and justify a method in unfamiliar contexts.

02

### Analysis and evaluation

Weigh evidence, compare explanations and produce a sustained, coherent argument.

03

### Independent response

Develop and review your own solution or interpretation using the current subject requirements.

## Practise a skill. Understand your next step.

Choose a topic that fits your current level. These short samples support the skills discussed above; they are not a complete New Zealand Scholarship mock test.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your differentiation and integration learning into practice.

Worked example · Differentiation and integration

### Find the stationary point of f(x) = x^2 - 6x + 8.

1. Differentiate: f'(x) = 2x - 6.
2. Set f'(x) = 0, so x = 3.
3. f(3) = -1. The parabola opens upwards, so (3, -1) is a minimum.

Common mistakes to check

- Forgetting the constant of integration
- Assuming every stationary point is a maximum

A focused way forward

## Build a study routine around the test.

Use the current subject performance standard, past assessment and official commentary to identify the level of reasoning required. Discuss a difficult problem in depth, then attempt a new one independently. Review the quality of the argument rather than only whether a numerical answer matches.

Discuss your next step

1. 01

### Understand the starting point

Use the official requirements and your attempted work to identify the next skill.
2. 02

### Practise with a purpose

Review a method, attempt a new task and explain the reasoning in your own words.
3. 03

### Review and adjust

Check repeated mistakes and revisit the skill before adding more timed practice.
