 The right starting point

 Two papers.Two different problems.

0478 has no tiers and no coursework, so everyone sits the same two papers. But they fail for opposite reasons: Paper 1 punishes vague vocabulary, and Paper 2 punishes vague method. Tuition that treats them as one subject usually fixes neither.

 PAPER 1Computer Systems

Say it in the examiner’s words.

Data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and emerging technologies. Marks here are lost to loose definitions far more often than to missing knowledge.

Use precise terminology instead of near-synonyms.

Handle binary, hex and file-size calculations cleanly.

Answer to the command word and the mark count.

 Find a Paper 1 tutor ↗

 PAPER 2Algorithms, Programming & Logic

 Method first, then code.

Algorithm design, programming, databases and Boolean logic, including the longer scenario question. This is where trace tables, dry running and correct pseudocode syntax earn or cost the grade.

Build trace tables that don’t skip a row.

Write Cambridge pseudocode, not your school’s dialect.

Simplify logic expressions and draw the circuit.

 ?Not sure of your code

 0478, 0984, 0417 or 2210?

Computing codes get mixed up constantly, and the wrong revision guide wastes a term. Tell us the code on your statement of entry and we’ll confirm what it means before you buy anything.

0984 is the 9–1 graded version of 0478.

0417 is ICT, a different subject with practical assessment.

2210 is the O Level version, closely related but separate.

Help me check my code ↗

Your statement of entry lists the syllabus code and component numbers. Sharing it makes tutor matching much more precise.

 Understand it. Then practise it.

Most lost marksare process, not talent.

Students who code confidently still drop marks in Paper 2, usually for the same three reasons: tracing in their head instead of on paper, writing in their own programming language when pseudocode is required, and answering a six-mark question in one line.

1Find the missing stepStart with a question that went wrong, and work out whether the gap is knowledge, method or exam technique. They need different fixes.

2Work through it togetherModel the method once at the whiteboard, writing every intermediate value down rather than jumping to the answer.

3Try it independentlyTrace a fresh algorithm alone, then compare against the mark scheme to see exactly where a mark would have been awarded.

A glimpse of the approachOriginal example

Paper 2: trace it, don’t guess it.

 count ← 0

FOR i ← 1 TO 5

 IF i MOD 2 = 0 THEN

 count ← count + 1

 ENDIF

NEXT i

OUTPUT count

What does this output? Most wrong answers come from reading it rather than tracing it.

See the steps, not just the answer

Build a table with a column for i and one for count, and write a row per pass. i MOD 2 = 0 is only true when i is even, so the counter increments at i = 2 and i = 4.

The output is 2. The value matters less than the habit: examiners award marks for the trace table itself, so a written table can score even when the final number is wrong.

The rule that quietly costs marks

In Paper 2, Cambridge requires coding solutions to be written in pseudocode, and states that solutions written in program code are not awarded marks. The exception is the 15-mark scenario question.

So a fluent Python student can still score zero on a question by answering in Python. Lessons cover translating what you already know into the pseudocode the mark scheme expects. Check the rule in the syllabus for your own exam year.

 Current-paper preparation

Prepare for the papersyou will actually sit.

Online IGCSE Computer Science tuition can include topic teaching, past-paper review and timed practice. We match practice to your exam year, because the pseudocode conventions and the syllabus wording have both been updated in recent versions.

Two details worth knowing early. Coding answers in Paper 2 must be written in pseudocode, with the exception of the 15-mark scenario question. And in data representation calculations, Cambridge uses 1024 rather than 1000. Both are easy marks once you know, and quiet losses if you don’t.

 Before you choose

 One-to-one is notthe only option.

It is also not always the right one. Group classes and recorded courses cost less per hour and suit some students well. Here is an honest comparison of what each format actually gives you, so you can decide rather than be sold to.

A comparison of tutoring formats, not of named providers. Rates for other formats vary widely, so check them directly with the provider you are considering.

If you are comparing us against a specific provider, ask them three questions: how many students share the tutor, whether lessons follow your exact syllabus code and paper route, and whether written work is marked individually. Those three answers explain most of the price difference between formats.

Which papers do I sit for IGCSE Computer Science 0478?Two, and there is no coursework. Paper 1 Computer Systems and Paper 2 Algorithms, Programming and Logic are each 1 hour 45 minutes, 75 marks and worth 50% of the qualification. Grades A* to G are available to every candidate, with no tiering. Calculators are not permitted in either paper.

Do I have to answer in pseudocode in Paper 2?Mostly yes, and this catches people out. Cambridge requires coding solutions to be written in pseudocode, and states that solutions written in program code will not be awarded marks, with the exception of the 15-mark scenario question. Confirm the wording in the syllabus for your exam year before you revise.

Is Computer Science 0478 the same as ICT 0417?No. They are different subjects with different papers. Computer Science 0478 is about how computers work and how to design algorithms, assessed by two written papers. ICT 0417 is about using applications such as spreadsheets, databases and presentation software, and includes practical assessment. Check which one your school entered you for.

Is 0984 a different course from 0478?It is the same syllabus with different grading. 0984 is the Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) version of Computer Science, reporting grades 9 to 1 instead of A* to G. The content, papers and questions match, so tutoring works identically. Use the code printed on your statement of entry.

Is IGCSE 0478 the same as O Level Computer Science 2210?They are closely related but separate qualifications. 2210 is the Cambridge O Level version and 0478 is the IGCSE version. The subject content is very similar, which is why past papers often circulate together, but availability and entry differ by country. Revise from the syllabus for the code you are entered for.

Which programming language should I learn for 0478?Cambridge names Python, Java and Visual Basic as suitable languages for developing practical programming skills. Python is the most common choice in schools. Whichever you use, exam answers still need Cambridge pseudocode, so lessons cover translating between the language you know and the pseudocode the mark scheme expects.

Can you help with trace tables and algorithm questions?Yes, and they are among the most requested topics. Trace tables are mechanical once the method is right, and most lost marks come from skipping rows or updating variables in the wrong order. Lessons cover tracing, dry running, identifying errors in given algorithms and writing your own.

Is there any coursework in IGCSE Computer Science? No. For the current 0478 syllabus your entire grade comes from the two written papers. There is no externally marked coursework and no practical programming exam, although schools still teach programming because it underpins Paper 2. Your school may set internal projects that do not count towards the Cambridge grade.

Can a student with no coding background take 0478?Yes. Plenty of students start the course without having written a line of code, and Paper 1 is theory rather than programming. Paper 2 does need programming logic, so early lessons usually build the basics before moving to trace tables and the longer scenario question.

How much do online IGCSE Computer Science lessons cost?Sessions are €5 to €15 for 60 minutes, or £4 to £13, set by the student's grade. Computer Science at IGCSE level is €12 / £10 a session. A monthly plan reduces that: 5% off at 8 sessions, 8% at 12, 12% at 15 and 15% at 20, so 20 sessions a month works out at €10.20 / £8.50 each. The 30-minute demo is free.

Are the online Computer Science lessons genuinely one-to-one?Yes. Regular Noble Educators tutoring sessions are for one student and one tutor, rather than a group class. The standard lesson length is 60 minutes. The introductory demo is a separate, free 30-minute session.

Can I study with an India-based tutor from another country?Yes, online lessons can be arranged across countries, subject to tutor availability. Share the student’s country and preferred times in their local time zone. Our team will confirm a suitable schedule before lessons begin.

Can the tutor help me aim for an A or A*?You can request support towards a higher target grade, including harder questions, sharper terminology and timed practice. A grade cannot be guaranteed. 0478 is untiered, so A* is available to every candidate without a separate exam entry.

What happens after I submit the form? The form prepares your enquiry and opens WhatsApp addressed to Noble Educators at +91 9229648496. You review the message and press Send. Our team then discusses tutor options, confirms your rate and suggests a demo time. Your request is not sent until you press Send.
