 The right starting point

0500 and 0475 aretwo different subjects.

This trips up more families than any other part of IGCSE English. First Language English and Literature in English are separate qualifications with separate papers, separate skills and separate grades. Many students take both. Tuition that treats them as one subject helps with neither.

 0500First Language English

 Your own reading and writing.

No set texts. You are marked on how well you read unseen passages and how well you write. Paper 1 tests reading; the writing half is either Paper 2 or a coursework portfolio.

Answer for implicit meaning, not just the obvious.

Summarise in your own words, inside the word limit.

Write directed, descriptive and narrative pieces with control.

 0475Literature in English

 Your response to studied texts.

Poetry, prose and drama that your school selects from the set text list. Everyone sits Paper 1; your centre then picks one of three routes for the second half of the qualification.

Build an argument instead of retelling the plot.

Quote briefly and analyse the writer’s choices.

Prepare for closed-book recall or open-text technique.

 ?Not sure of your code

 0990, 0992, 0510, 0486?

English has more overlapping syllabus codes than any other IGCSE subject, and buying the wrong revision guide is an easy mistake. Tell us the code on your statement of entry and we’ll confirm what it means.

 0990 and 0992 are the 9–1 graded versions of 0500 and 0475.

0510 and 0511 are English as a Second Language, not First Language.

 0486 was replaced by 0475 from 2020.

Help me check my code ↗

Your statement of entry lists the syllabus code and component numbers. If you can share it, tutor matching gets much more precise.

 Understand it. Then practise it.

 Marks come frommethod, not opinion.

English feels subjective from the outside. It isn’t, particularly. Examiners reward specific moves: reading beyond the literal, rewording rather than lifting, quoting briefly and then explaining the effect. Those moves can be taught, practised and checked.

1Find the missing stepStart with a marked piece of work or a question that went badly, rather than re-covering the content you already handle well.

2Work through it togetherName the move the question is asking for, model it once, then rebuild the answer line by line so you can see where the marks sit.

3Try it independentlyWrite a fresh response under similar conditions, then compare your wording against what the mark scheme actually credits.

A glimpse of the approachOriginal example

0500 Paper 1: reading past the literal.

She folded the letter twice, put it in her coat pocket, and did not read it again.Original passage written for this page

The text never says how she feels. So what can you actually prove about her from this sentence?

See the steps, not just the answer

Weak answers say she is sad. Nothing here proves that. Strong answers work from the words on the page: “folded” and “put” are calm, deliberate actions, and “twice” suggests care rather than temper.

The mark is in the last clause. “Did not read it again” implies she already knows what it says and has decided something about it. That is an implicit meaning drawn from the text, which is exactly what the question rewards.

Taking 0475? Try an analysis move.

Take a line where a writer describes a house as waiting for someone. The three-layer move: name the choice, explain the effect, link it outwards.

The house is given a human action, so it stops being scenery and starts being watchful. That unease then does real work in the wider text. One short quotation, three sentences, no plot retelling.

Illustrative teaching examples written for this page, not extracts from set texts or past papers. Your lesson follows your syllabus and your own texts.

 Current-paper preparation

Prepare for the papersyou will actually sit.

Two subjects, two structures. Both offer a coursework alternative that your school chooses, so the components on your timetable may not match the ones a friend at another school sits.

Literature set texts rotate every year. Cambridge publishes a separate 0475 syllabus for each exam year because the set texts change. A past paper is only useful practice if your text was on that year’s list. Check the set text list for the year you sit before building a revision plan around old papers.

 Before you choose

 One-to-one is notthe only option.

It is also not always the right one. Group classes and recorded courses cost less per hour and suit some students well. Here is an honest comparison of what each format actually gives you, so you can decide rather than be sold to.

A comparison of tutoring formats, not of named providers. Rates for other formats vary widely, so check them directly with the provider you are considering.

If you are comparing us against a specific provider, ask them three questions: how many students share the tutor, whether lessons follow your exact syllabus code and paper route, and whether written work is marked individually. Those three answers explain most of the price difference between formats.

What is the difference between IGCSE 0500 and 0475?They are two separate qualifications. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 assesses your own reading and writing skills, with no set texts. Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475 assesses your response to studied poetry, prose and drama. Many students take both, and they are examined and graded independently.

Is 0500 the same as 0510 or 0511?No, and this is the most common mix-up. 0500 is First Language English, for students whose first language is English. 0510 and 0511 are English as a Second Language, a different course with different papers. 0510 carries a separately endorsed speaking grade; in 0511 the speaking mark counts towards the overall grade.

My school says 0990 or 0992. Is that a different course? It is the same subject with different grading. 0990 is the 9 to 1 graded version of First Language English 0500, and 0992 is the 9 to 1 version of Literature in English 0475. The content and papers match, so tutoring works the same way. Use the code printed on your statement of entry.

What happened to syllabus 0486?0486 was the previous code for Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English. Its last examination was in November 2019, and 0475 replaced it from 2020. Older 0486 revision material may still be useful for technique, but check any past paper against the current syllabus and your own set texts before relying on it.

Which components do I take for First Language English 0500?Two. Everyone takes Paper 1 Reading, a two-hour, 80-mark paper. For the writing half you take either Paper 2 Directed Writing and Composition, also two hours and 80 marks, or Component 3, a coursework portfolio of three assignments. Component 4 Speaking and Listening is optional and separately endorsed.

Which route do I take for Literature in English 0475?Everyone takes Paper 1 Poetry and Prose, worth 50%. Your school then chooses one of three routes for the remaining 50%: Paper 2 Drama on its own; Paper 3 Drama (Open Text) plus Paper 4 Unseen; or Paper 3 plus Component 5 Coursework. Ask your teacher which route your centre has entered you for.

Do the IGCSE Literature set texts change every year?Yes. Cambridge states that set texts rotate and may change from one year of examination to the next, which is why 0475 has a separate syllabus document per exam year. A past paper is only useful practice if your text was on that year’s list, so always check the set text list for the year you sit.

Can a tutor help with the coursework routes?A tutor can teach the skills, discuss how to approach an assignment and give feedback on drafts, in the same way a teacher would. The work must remain the candidate’s own, and your centre is responsible for authenticating it. We will not write or rewrite coursework. Check your school’s rules before sharing a draft.

Can you help with the summary question in Paper 1?Yes, and it is one of the most requested skills. The task asks for continuous writing in your own words within a tight word limit, so marks are lost by lifting phrasing from the text or by listing points without connecting them. Lessons cover selecting the right points, rewording them and staying inside the limit.

Are the online English lessons genuinely one-to-one?Yes. Regular Noble Educators tutoring sessions are for one student and one tutor, rather than a group class. The standard lesson length is 60 minutes. The introductory demo is a separate, free 30-minute session.

Can I study with an India-based English tutor from another country?Yes, online lessons can be arranged across countries, subject to tutor availability. Share the student’s country and preferred times in their local time zone. Our team will confirm a suitable schedule before lessons begin.

How much are online IGCSE English lessons?Sessions are €5 to €15 for 60 minutes, or £4 to £13, set by the student's grade. English at IGCSE level is €12 / £10 a session. A monthly plan reduces that: 5% off at 8 sessions, 8% at 12, 12% at 15 and 15% at 20, so 20 sessions a month works out at €10.20 / £8.50 each. The 30-minute demo is free.

Can the tutor help me aim for an A or A*?You can request support towards a higher target grade, including harder questions, sharper analysis and timed practice. A grade cannot be guaranteed. Both 0500 and 0475 are untiered, so A* is available to every candidate without a separate exam entry.

What happens after I submit the form? The form prepares your enquiry and opens WhatsApp addressed to Noble Educators at +91 9229648496. You review the message and press Send. Our team then discusses tutor options and confirms a demo time. Your request is not sent until you press Send, and your demo is confirmed separately by our team.
