Why Reception matters more than most parents realise
Reception is the first year of primary school in England, and it sets the trajectory for everything that follows. In just nine short months, children move from recognising a few letters to writing full sentences, from counting on their fingers to working confidently with numbers up to 20, and from parallel play to structured group learning. The Statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards every Reception teacher works towards, and the seven areas of learning — Communication and Language, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design — shape every lesson.
But here is the challenge parents tell us about most: Reception moves fast, and there is no formal exam to measure readiness for Year 1. Without a structured way to practise at home, gaps can quietly form in the very skills your child will need in September.

How to use the quizzes at home (a 10-minute plan)
You do not need to do all 39 quizzes. The trick is to use them as a 10-minute daily warm-up or a Saturday family quiz time. Here is a plan that has worked for the families we tutor:
Monday to Friday (5 minutes): Pick one topic your child is working on at school and do the Easy version. The goal is confidence, not challenge.
Saturday (10 minutes): Pick a different topic and do the Medium version together. Talk through any wrong answers — the explanations in every quiz are designed for parent-and-child reading.
Once a term (15 minutes): Try the Hard version of a topic to check long-term retention. If your child scores 80% or more, that topic is locked in.
Why difficulty levels matter at this age
A common mistake we see is giving a Reception child a quiz that is too hard, then assuming they are "behind." EYFS is a developmental stage, and the gap between a child who has just turned 4 and one about to turn 5 can be enormous. Our three difficulty levels let you:
Start at Easy — every question has a visual cue or familiar context. This builds the "I can do this" feeling.
Move to Medium — once they can answer 8 out of 10 Easy questions, they are ready for slightly longer reading and trickier distractors.
Try Hard — the final level mirrors the more demanding end-of-Year 1 expectations, so you can see how they are tracking for transition.
Aligned to the EYFS framework
Every quiz in this pack was reviewed against the Development Matters non-statutory guidance and the Early Learning Goals for each area of learning. The questions use the same vocabulary your child's teacher will use in class (number bonds, blend, segment, life cycle, instruction) so what your child practises at home is exactly what they will be asked to demonstrate in school.
Beyond the quizzes: 1-on-1 Reception support
If your child is finding a particular topic tricky — or if you simply want them to start Year 1 ahead of the curve — our UK Reception EYFS tutors provide structured 1-on-1 online sessions tailored to your child's school and pace. Every tutor is trained in the EYFS approach: short, playful, multi-sensory lessons that build the foundations your child will use for the next seven years of primary school.
