## A closer look at Economics.

01

### What to focus on in Economics

State the assumptions behind an economic explanation. Distinguish a change in a good’s own price from a change in another influence on demand, and explain the chain of reasoning rather than naming a diagram alone.

02

### Match practice to your actual course

PYP is for ages 3–12, MYP for 11–16 and DP for 16–19. School grade labels vary. The Career-related Programme is a separate route: ask about support for its individual DP subjects. Guidance develops the student’s own work and follows academic integrity requirements. PYP · MYP · Diploma Programme. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples economics: scarcity, demand and opportunity cost; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

03

### Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is treating opportunity cost as every possible alternative added together or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your economics learning into practice.

Worked example · Economics: scarcity, demand and opportunity cost

### A student can spend an evening working for 30 currency units or attending a free concert. What is one opportunity cost of choosing the concert?

1. Time is scarce, so both activities cannot be chosen for that evening.
2. The next best alternative is the paid work.
3. The foregone earnings are 30 currency units, assuming that work was the next best alternative. The concert being free does not remove opportunity cost.

Common mistakes to check

- Treating opportunity cost as every possible alternative added together
- Confusing a movement along demand with a shift of demand
