## A closer look at Geography.

01

### What to focus on in Geography

Connect a geographical description to a process or a piece of evidence. For numerical work, identify the units and scale; for explanations, show the sequence that links a cause to an observed pattern.

02

### Match practice to your actual course

PYP is for ages 3–12, MYP for 11–16 and DP for 16–19. School grade labels vary. The Career-related Programme is a separate route: ask about support for its individual DP subjects. Guidance develops the student’s own work and follows academic integrity requirements. PYP · MYP · Diploma Programme. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples geography: maps, rivers and geographical evidence; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

03

### Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is confusing straight-line distance with route distance or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your geography learning into practice.

Worked example · Geography: maps, rivers and geographical evidence

### A map scale is 1:50,000. Two places are 4 cm apart on the map. What is the straight-line distance?

1. Each centimetre on the map represents 50,000 cm on the ground.
2. 4 × 50,000 = 200,000 cm.
3. Convert to metres and kilometres: 2,000 m = 2 km. A road route may be longer.

Common mistakes to check

- Confusing straight-line distance with route distance
- Describing a pattern without explaining a process
