Know what you’re preparing for

## Your test, in context.

### Who it’s for

Students preparing for domestic or international AS/A-level qualifications.

### What to expect

Subject and board-specific assessment; domestic and international AS/A-level routes can differ in structure and how components contribute.

### Before you plan

Confirm the awarding body, subject, specification and component choices. Tutors support understanding and revision; assessed coursework remains the student’s own work.

Understanding before speed

## The skills to focus on.

01

### Mathematics and sciences

Connect topics, justify methods and interpret data with accurate units and assumptions.

02

### Essay and analytical subjects

Build a sustained argument, evaluate evidence and make a conclusion that follows from the analysis.

03

### Synoptic revision

Practise choosing between methods when a question combines several areas of the course.

## Practise a skill. Understand your next step.

Choose a topic that fits your current level. These short samples support the skills discussed above; they are not a complete AS and A-level exam mock test.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your differentiation and integration learning into practice.

Worked example · Differentiation and integration

### Find the stationary point of f(x) = x^2 - 6x + 8.

1. Differentiate: f'(x) = 2x - 6.
2. Set f'(x) = 0, so x = 3.
3. f(3) = -1. The parabola opens upwards, so (3, -1) is a minimum.

Common mistakes to check

- Forgetting the constant of integration
- Assuming every stationary point is a maximum

A focused way forward

## Build a study routine around the test.

Begin with prerequisite gaps that limit later topics. Use a cycle of worked example, independent attempt and delayed review, then introduce mixed questions. For written subjects, improve a paragraph’s reasoning before rehearsing a full timed response.

Discuss your next step

1. 01

### Understand the starting point

Use the official requirements and your attempted work to identify the next skill.
2. 02

### Practise with a purpose

Review a method, attempt a new task and explain the reasoning in your own words.
3. 03

### Review and adjust

Check repeated mistakes and revisit the skill before adding more timed practice.
