# AP English Language and Composition tutoring

Move beyond identifying a technique: explain why a writer makes a choice for a particular audience. Build clear, evidence-based arguments and learn to connect sources without losing your own line of reasoning.

## A closer look at AP English Language and Composition.

01

### Rhetorical analysis: connect choices to purpose

Identify the situation, intended audience and purpose before annotating techniques. Select a few significant choices and explain their function in the argument. A paragraph needs commentary connecting evidence to your claim, rather than a list of devices.

02

### Synthesis and argument writing

Compare the positions and limitations of sources, then use relevant evidence to develop your own qualified claim. Practise integrating and attributing sources, addressing a counterargument and maintaining a coherent line of reasoning. For argument practice, distinguish a relevant example from an unsupported generalisation.

03

### Reading, revision and exam preparation

Work on nonfiction passages and revise your own paragraphs for clarity, organisation and precision. Use current College Board materials for exam requirements. The short original worksheet below develops rhetorical commentary; it is not a full AP exam or an official scoring exercise.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your ap english language and composition learning into practice.

Worked example · Rhetorical analysis: choices and effects

### Original council speech: "A library is not a luxury for the few; it is a doorway for every child." How does the contrast support a request for library funding?

1. The contrast sets an exclusive luxury against a shared opportunity.
2. The reference to every child invites the council to consider a public responsibility.
3. An analytical claim connects the contrast to the purpose: the speaker frames funding as an investment in access rather than an optional expense.

Common mistakes to check
