## A closer look at AP English Literature and Composition.

01

### Close reading across literary forms

Study short fiction, poetry, longer fiction and drama. Track how details of character, setting, narration and structure shape an interpretation. In poetry, connect diction, imagery and shifts to meaning instead of identifying techniques in isolation.

02

### Build a literary argument

Start with a claim that another thoughtful reader could discuss. Select textual details that support it and explain how they work together. Distinguish the narrator’s perspective from the author, and acknowledge ambiguity when the text supports more than one reading.

03

### From annotation to an independent response

Bring a passage or your own draft to a lesson. Practise moving from an observation to a claim, evidence and commentary, then revise a new paragraph independently. Use current College Board materials for assessment requirements; the original activity below is a focused skill sample.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your ap english literature and composition learning into practice.

Worked example · Literary analysis: detail, tension and meaning

### Original passage: "Mira placed the unopened letter beneath the vase. All evening, she watered flowers that needed no water." What might her actions suggest?

1. The unopened letter suggests that Mira is postponing an encounter with its contents.
2. Repeated, unnecessary watering can be read as distraction or displaced anxiety.
3. A defensible interpretation is that her attention to a harmless task reveals reluctance to confront an emotionally difficult message; the passage does not tell us what the letter contains.

Common mistakes to check

- Retelling events instead of analysing their significance
- Inventing details that the passage does not establish
