## What students learn

01

### The Regents exams

Regents exams are given in ELA; Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II; Life Science: Biology and Earth & Space Sciences; Chemistry and Physics; and Global History & Geography II and U.S. History & Government. New Chemistry and Physics exams start in June 2026, and the old versions are given through June 2027. Each exam is scored from 0 to 100, and 65 is the passing score, with some exceptions.

02

### Grades 3–8 tests and the diploma change

Students in grades 3 to 8 take ELA and math, plus science in grades 5 and 8, on computer since spring 2026. Results use NYS Levels 1 to 4, where Level 3 is proficient. Today a diploma needs a passing score on one Regents exam each in ELA, math, science and social studies, plus one pathway ("4+1"). A Commissioner's memo of 28 September 2026 says students graduating in January 2028 or later will earn one NYS Diploma without Regents passing requirements. Regents exams will still be given.
