## A closer look at Social Studies.

01

### What to focus on in Social Studies

Ask who created a source, when, for whom and why. A primary source provides evidence from its context, but it does not automatically provide a complete or unbiased account.

02

### Match practice to your actual course

History, civics, geography and source analysis. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples sources, evidence and civic reasoning; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

03

### Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is treating a source as useless simply because it has a perspective or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

## Put your social studies learning into practice.

Worked example · Sources, evidence and civic reasoning

### A factory owner writes a newspaper letter supporting longer working hours. What should a historian consider?

1. Identify the author's role and purpose.
2. Consider how the owner may benefit from the policy.
3. Compare the letter with workers' accounts and other records before drawing a conclusion.

Common mistakes to check

- Treating a source as useless simply because it has a perspective
- Making a broad claim from one example
