Diagnose before drilling

A text response essay argues a position about a text rather than describing what happens in it. The single largest difference between a mid-range and a high-range response is not vocabulary or quotation count but whether the writing analyses or retells, and that difference is visible in the first sentence of every body paragraph.

The first session finds what is actually breaking down — missing content, a weak method, or lost confidence — because practising the wrong thing wastes a term.
2
Lessons aim at the student's next school task — a SAC, assessment, trial, NAPLAN window or exam block — not a generic syllabus order.
3
Timed where the task is timed, written where it is written, with the calculator and formula rules the real assessment uses.
4
After lessons, parents get plain-language notes: what was covered, what improved, and the next piece of work — no jargon, no guesswork.
An introduction exists to state a position on the prompt that the rest of the essay will defend. A contention that could be agreed with by anyone is not a contention, and an introduction that summarises the plot has used its words without taking any position at all — the examiner has read the text.
The strongest introductions engage with the specific wording of the prompt rather than the general topic. A prompt asking to what extent something is true is inviting a qualified answer, and responses that ignore the qualification and argue an absolute position have answered a different question.
The TEEL sequence puts a topic sentence first, then evidence, then explanation, then a link. The ordering matters: evidence precedes explanation because you present what the text does and then interpret it, whereas asserting first and hunting for support afterwards produces writing that reads as though the conclusion came before the reading.
The topic sentence should make an arguable claim about effect rather than describe an event. A sentence stating that the narration shifts and leaves the reader uncertain whom to trust can be disputed and therefore requires proof; a sentence stating that the narrator moves to the city in chapter three cannot be disputed and proves nothing.
The link is what stops an essay reading as three unconnected observations. Returning explicitly to the prompt's wording at the close of each paragraph, in different words each time, keeps the argument visible and demonstrates that the structure is deliberate rather than accidental.
Short embedded quotations integrated into your own sentences signal control. Long block quotations shift the reading back to the author and consume words you need for analysis, and a response that quotes heavily while explaining lightly ends up with the text arguing on your behalf, which is precisely what is not being assessed.
Evidence does not have to be a quotation. Reference to structure, to a shift in narrative perspective, to what the author declines to show, or to the position of a scene within the whole work all count as evidence, and responses that draw on structural choices tend to read as more sophisticated than those relying only on dialogue.
The test for whether you are analysing is simple: after each statement about what happens, ask why the author constructed it that way and what it positions the reader to think. If your paragraph never answers that question, it is retelling regardless of how many quotations it contains.
Spending five minutes deciding your contention and the three ideas that support it is not lost writing time. Essays written without a plan characteristically repeat a point in the second and third paragraphs, and the repetition is far more costly than the five minutes would have been.
Write the plan as three arguable claims rather than three topics. A plan reading narration, setting, ending gives you nothing to write from, while a plan of three claims about what those elements do to the reader effectively drafts your topic sentences before you begin.
