    OSSLT literacy preparation

Practise reading for meaning, using evidence and organising a written response. The OSSLT is one route to Ontario’s literacy graduation requirement; eligibility, accommodations and alternative routes are decisions for the school.

    01

Prepare for the skills behind the questions

Use the official assessment samples linked below to identify task types. Practise one skill at a time, compare the reasoning with a model and keep a short record of errors. A topic worksheet is a starting activity, not a replica of the provincial assessment.

    Confirm your assessment arrangements

Ask the school about the current schedule, permitted tools, access arrangements and how results are used. Bring the grade and subject when requesting a demo; students do not all sit the same assessment.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your osslt literacy preparation learning into practice.

Worked example · Reading evidence and paragraph writing

Read: Maya checked the empty road again and tightened her grip on the letter. What might Maya be feeling?

    1. A reasonable inference is anxiety or anticipation.
    2. The repeated checking and tightened grip support the inference.
    3. Explain the connection while acknowledging that more context could change it.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Retelling the plot instead of analysing
    • Using a quotation without explaining its effect
    More than a lesson

    A clearer explanation.
