    Know what you’re preparing for

    Your test, in context.

    Who it’s for

Applicants to independent schools that use ISEE results. The level is based on the grade the student is applying to enter.

    What to expect

Primary is for entry to Grades 2–4, Lower to Grades 5–6, Middle to Grades 7–8 and Upper to Grades 9–12. Primary formats differ from the older-level tests.

    Before you plan

Do not choose a level solely from the student’s current grade. Confirm the receiving school’s requirements, test window and approved access arrangements.

    Understanding before speed

    The skills to focus on.

    01

    Reading and vocabulary

Explain the meaning of a passage and use context to work through unfamiliar language.

    02

    Mathematical achievement and reasoning

Build secure methods and apply them to a new problem, matching the level’s expected content.

    03

    Written expression

For levels with an essay, plan a relevant response and support it with clear examples.

Choose a topic that fits your current level. These short samples support the skills discussed above; they are not a complete ISEE mock test.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your read, infer and write a paragraph learning into practice.

Worked example · Read, infer and write a paragraph

Read: Leo put his umbrella away as a patch of blue appeared above the trees. What probably happened to the weather?

    1. The text says Leo put his umbrella away.
    2. The patch of blue suggests the clouds are clearing.
    3. It is reasonable to infer that rain has stopped or is stopping.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Answering from a guess without checking the text
    • Putting unrelated ideas in the same paragraph

    A focused way forward

Build a study routine around the test.

Use the official guide for the correct entry grade before selecting practice. Review one demonstrated gap at a time, then apply the method in an unfamiliar task. For younger pupils, prioritise understanding and comfortable familiarisation over long timed sessions.
