What to focus on in Psychology

Identify what a study measures before evaluating what it shows. An operational definition makes a variable measurable, while the design determines which conclusions the evidence can support.

    02

Match practice to your actual course

PYP is for ages 3–12, MYP for 11–16 and DP for 16–19. School grade labels vary. The Career-related Programme is a separate route: ask about support for its individual DP subjects. Guidance develops the student’s own work and follows academic integrity requirements. PYP · MYP · Diploma Programme. Your school’s subject choices, topic sequence and assessment tasks determine the detailed plan. The practice set below samples research methods and evaluating evidence; it is not a complete syllabus or an official exam paper.

    03

Prepare a useful question for your tutor

Bring one attempted question and show your working or first draft. Explain what you tried and where the reasoning stopped. Together, identify whether the difficulty is assuming a correlation establishes causation or a missing prerequisite, then try a fresh problem independently.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your psychology learning into practice.

Worked example · Research methods and evaluating evidence

A study compares word recall after 5 or 8 hours of sleep. Identify the variables.

    1. The independent variable is the sleep-duration condition.
    2. The dependent variable could be the number of words correctly recalled from the same list.
    3. Other conditions, such as testing time and list difficulty, need consideration.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Assuming a correlation establishes causation
    • Using an evaluation point without explaining its consequence
