    A closer look at Math.

    01

    Your course, clearly identified

Mathematics of Data Management, University Preparation (MDM4U) is listed in Ontario’s course catalogue at Grade 12. Ask your school for the current course outline and assessment expectations, then share them with your tutor.

    02

    MDM4U: topics to discuss

Counting methods, probability, probability distributions, data collection and statistical interpretation. Decide whether order and replacement matter before selecting a counting method. When working with data, explain sampling choices and limitations instead of reporting a numerical summary alone. Confirm the current topic sequence and full coverage using your school’s outline and the official source below.

    03

    Building confidence in math

Start with the question and how the data were collected. Summaries describe a sample; a claim about a larger population also depends on sampling and variability. Lessons can alternate a modelled example, a question attempted together and an independent attempt so the tutor can see where understanding changes.

    04

Use school feedback to guide revision

Bring a recent question, marked solution or topic checklist. Explain where you got stuck. The next practice task should check that particular skill before introducing more complexity. Tutoring supports learning; assessed submissions remain the student’s own work.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your math learning into practice.

Worked example · Data, probability and interpretation

    Find the mean and median of 2, 3, 4, 6, 10.

    1. The total is 25 and there are 5 values, so mean = 5.
    2. The ordered middle value is 4, so median = 4.
    3. The high value of 10 pulls the mean above the median.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Treating correlation as causation
    • Ignoring whether a sample represents the population
