A closer look at Mathematical Literacy.

    01

What we can work on together

Interpret the numbers used in practical contexts, including budgets, measurement and data. Read units and conditions carefully before calculating. Identify what a table or document actually states. Choose the relevant figures, show the calculation and explain the answer in the original practical context.

    02

    Match practice to your course

Bring a marked task and the topic list for the next assessment. Your tutor can help distinguish weak prerequisites from presentation errors, then choose a manageable set of questions to revisit.

    03

Make the lesson fit your school work in South Africa

For school support in South Africa, share the CAPS phase, assessment body and language level where relevant. Use the school’s term plan to sequence practice and discuss a realistic routine around homework, connectivity and the next assessment. Bring an attempted question so your tutor can see how you reason, then agree what to practise next.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your mathematical literacy learning into practice.

Worked example · Mathematical Literacy: budgets, units and data

A household has R4,000 available and plans R1,250 for food, R800 for transport and R600 for electricity. How much remains?

    1. Add the planned expenses: 1,250 + 800 + 600 = R2,650.
    2. Subtract expenses from the available amount: 4,000 - 2,650 = R1,350.
    3. R1,350 remains before any other expenses. This is an arithmetic result, not a recommendation about spending.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Using a percentage of the wrong starting amount
    • Mixing centimetres and metres in one calculation
    • Treating an estimated budget as a complete list of expenses
