    Know what you’re preparing for

    Your test, in context.

    Who it’s for

Families in England discussing the Year 1 phonics screening check or Year 4 multiplication tables check.

    What to expect

These are distinct school checks at different stages. Phonics focuses on decoding; the multiplication check focuses on times-table recall.

    Before you plan

Ask the school which check applies and how it supports familiarisation. The downloadable sheets develop foundational skills rather than reproducing either check.

    A focused way forward

Build a study routine around the test.

For reading, practise a small set of sound patterns with the school’s terminology and read together regularly. For multiplication, connect related facts such as 4 × 6 and 6 × 4, then rehearse accurate recall. Avoid transferring Year 4 speed expectations to an early reader.
