    Know what you’re preparing for

    Your test, in context.

    Who it’s for

Applicants whose mathematics-related university offer or application specifies STEP.

    What to expect

STEP 2 and STEP 3 are distinct mathematics examinations. Their prerequisite mathematics and further-mathematics content differ.

    Before you plan

STEP and TMUA are different tests. A university decides which paper and result it requires; consult the actual course or offer conditions.

    Understanding before speed

    The skills to focus on.

    01

    Pure mathematical reasoning

Connect topics, work through substantial algebra and explain a complete line of argument.

    02

    Applied problem-solving

Use the required mechanics and probability/statistics content, checking assumptions and interpreting results.

    Free learning resources

Practise a skill. Understand your next step.

Choose a topic that fits your current level. These short samples support the skills discussed above; they are not a complete STEP Mathematics mock test.

Understand it. Try it. Review it.

Put your differentiation and integration learning into practice.

Worked example · Differentiation and integration

    Find the stationary point of f(x) = x^2 - 6x + 8.

    1. Differentiate: f'(x) = 2x - 6.
    2. Set f'(x) = 0, so x = 3.
    3. f(3) = -1. The parabola opens upwards, so (3, -1) is a minimum.
    Common mistakes to check
    • Forgetting the constant of integration
    • Assuming every stationary point is a maximum

    A focused way forward

Build a study routine around the test.

Check the current specification and required paper first. Work on one unfamiliar problem in depth, explain a partial solution and revisit the point where progress stopped. Use official papers to build question-selection and time-management habits once the prerequisite methods are secure.

    Discuss your next step
    1. 01

      Understand the starting point

Use the official requirements and your attempted work to identify the next skill.

    2. 02

      Practise with a purpose

Review a method, attempt a new task and explain the reasoning in your own words.

    3. 03

      Review and adjust

Check repeated mistakes and revisit the skill before adding more timed practice.
