    How school is organised

What families should know before matching a tutor.

Alberta Education and Childcare sets programs of study and provincial assessment rules. Families see elementary grades, junior high structures in many divisions, and senior high courses that use the 10, 20 and 30 naming convention.

The province is in a transition period because renewed curriculum is being introduced by subject and grade. That means the first research question is not only what grade the student is in, but whether the classroom is using current, renewed or locally phased material.

The move into high school changes the conversation. Course names such as Science 10, Math 20-1 or English Language Arts 30-1 tell the tutor the sequence, level and likely post-secondary pressure attached to the work.

    English Language Arts and Literature

Alberta has moved to English Language Arts and Literature language in renewed curriculum areas. Students still need reading, writing, speaking, listening and text interpretation, but the curriculum vocabulary asks tutors to connect skills to literature, information texts and communication expectations.

    Mathematics

Alberta Mathematics becomes highly pathway-specific in high school. Math 10C can lead toward Math 20-1, Math 30-1 and Math 31, or toward Math 20-2 and Math 30-2, so a tutor needs the exact sequence before choosing examples.

    Science

Alberta Science moves from broad elementary scientific literacy into Science 10, Biology, Chemistry and Physics sequences. Diploma-exam courses require a different kind of preparation because classroom marks and provincial exam performance combine in the final result.

Computing is not always a single elementary subject label. Digital skills may appear through career and technology studies, information and communication technology outcomes, optional high school computing courses and local programming choices.

    Assessments

    Alberta assessment context

The official provincial assessment names to know are Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Exams. PATs are administered to students in Grades 6 and 9 and are designed to show whether students are meeting provincial standards.

Diploma Exams apply to Grade 12 diploma exam courses. Alberta public information states that diploma exams are worth 30 percent of the official final mark, with 70 percent from school-awarded coursework, except where special rules or temporary administrations apply.

A January 2026 update cancelled some January diploma exams and Grade 9 PATs because of labour disruption. A hub page should therefore point families back to Alberta's assessment schedule rather than pretending every administration is identical every year.

    Graduation

Senior years and Alberta 10/20/30 pathways

Alberta high school course names communicate both grade level and pathway. The number 10, 20 or 30 usually identifies the high school level, while endings such as -1 and -2 in mathematics identify different routes through post-secondary preparation.

Families often ask whether Math 30-1 is required, whether Math 30-2 is enough, or how Science 10 connects to Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Those are pathway questions, not just homework questions.

The verified Alberta credential is the Alberta High School Diploma. Alberta public information describes it as requiring at least 100 credits in a high school setting and completion of mandatory courses.

Because diploma courses can affect post-secondary planning, graduation and admission planning should be separated. Meeting the diploma rules is not the same as meeting a university or college prerequisite list.

    Parent guidance

What to share before the first session.

Alberta parents usually need help interpreting pathways. A student who is doing well in Math 10C may still need advice about whether the -1 or -2 sequence fits the intended program after high school.

PAT and Diploma Exam preparation should not become worksheet drilling only. The better question is whether the student can explain their method, manage multi-step problems and sustain accuracy under exam timing.

In a transition curriculum environment, parents should keep the course outline, recent assessment rubrics and teacher feedback close. Those documents show the local implementation that a tutor must respect.
