Common Core Tutoring, One-to-One and Mapped to Your School

Common Core sets what your child should be able to do by the end of each grade, but every district paces it differently. We start from the pacing guide your school actually uses, find the standards your student has not locked in yet, and rebuild those before the class moves on. Sessions run one-to-one, so the tutor can slow down on a shaky prerequisite or push ahead when a topic clicks.

What we actually teach in Common Core

Every course below is taught one-to-one, so the tutor works the topics your student needs in the order their class needs them. These are the units we cover most often.

    Grades 1-5 Tutoring

    • number sense and operations
    • fractions, measurement, and word problems
    • reading comprehension and vocabulary
    • writing, spelling, and homework routines

    Essay Writing Tutoring

    • prompt reading, planning, and outlines
    • thesis statements and topic sentences
    • evidence, source use, and analysis
    • revision, transitions, grammar, and final drafts

    Middle School ELA Tutoring

    • reading comprehension, inference, and annotation
    • vocabulary, context clues, and word parts
    • text evidence, short responses, and paragraph writing
    • grammar, sentence structure, revision, and novel study

    Where students get stuck

The problems parents describe on the first call

    • Homework takes too long
    • Foundational skills feel shaky
    • The student needs more one-on-one explanation
    • The student does not know how to start
    • Paragraphs summarize instead of analyze
    • Revision stops at grammar instead of improving the essay

    What changes

What we work toward in Common Core

    • Build confidence with daily schoolwork
    • Practice at a pace that feels calm and achievable
    • Strengthen basics before the next grade level
    • Turn vague ideas into clear thesis statements
    • Build organized paragraphs with stronger evidence
    • Revise drafts using teacher rubrics and comments

    How Common Core sessions work

    01

    Free diagnostic lesson

A 45-minute session that finds which standards are secure and which are not, before anyone pays anything.

    02

A tutor matched to the course

We match on curriculum experience, not just subject, so the tutor already knows the sequence your school follows.

    03

Weekly sessions and a written report

Every lesson is recorded and chaptered, and you get a progress summary you can take to parent conferences.

    • Free 45-minute diagnostic
    • Every lesson recorded
    • No card required to start

    Why Common Core gaps compound

Common Core is deliberately vertical: fractions in Grade 4 become ratios in Grade 6, then linear relationships in Grade 8, then functions in Algebra. A student who never fully secured one layer can still pass the next by pattern-matching, which is why the trouble often surfaces years later, in Algebra 1 or Pre-Calculus. One-to-one sessions let a tutor stop and repair the specific layer that is missing instead of re-teaching a whole year, which is what group classes are forced to do.

Your district's pacing guide, not a generic syllabus

Two districts teaching the same standard can order it very differently, and textbooks from Illustrative Mathematics, Eureka and Big Ideas each sequence topics their own way. We ask which book and which pacing guide your school uses, then plan around it, so a session in October covers what the class is doing in October. That also means homework and upcoming assessments become the practice material rather than an extra workload on top.

    How progress gets measured

After the free diagnostic you get a written snapshot of which standards look secure and which do not. From there each session ends with a short note on what was covered and what is next, and the recording stays available. Before a unit test or state assessment, that history is what makes revision efficient: you already know which standards were shaky and can go straight to them.

    Questions parents ask

Do you follow my child's school for Common Core?+

Yes. We start from the pacing guide and textbook your school actually uses, then plan around the Common Core topics your student has not secured yet. Nothing is taught out of sequence with their class.

    Are lessons live or recorded?+

Every lesson is live and one-to-one. Sessions are also recorded and chaptered so your student can revisit any explanation before a test.

    How are tutors vetted?+

Subject testing, a teaching demo, reference checks and background screening. Tutors are matched by curriculum experience, not just subject.

What does the free demo include?+

A full 45-minute lesson, a written skills snapshot, and a proposed term plan. No payment details are required to book it.
