The HSPT, from Scholastic Testing Service, is used by high schools for admission and placement. It has five scored subtests: Verbal and Quantitative (the cognitive skills), and Reading, Mathematics and Language (the basic skills), where Language covers capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, usage and composition. Calculators are not allowed on Mathematics. A school may add an optional test such as Science, Catholic Religion or Mechanical Aptitude, which is not part of the composite score.
Each school or diocese gives the HSPT on paper on its own date. Results are reported as standard scores from 200 to 800 with national and local percentiles, and there is no penalty for wrong answers, so every question should be answered.
