The level follows the grade the student is applying to: Primary for grades 2–4, Lower for grades 5–6, Middle for grades 7–8 and Upper for grades 9–12. Middle and Upper Level have 161 questions in 2 hours 40 minutes (40 verbal, 37 quantitative, 36 reading and 47 math achievement), and Lower Level has 128 questions in 2 hours 20 minutes, each with breaks. Lower, Middle and Upper also include a 30-minute essay that is not scored but is sent to the schools you choose.
Each scored section gets a scaled score from 760 to 940, a percentile from 1 to 99 and a stanine from 1 to 9, and only correct answers count. Students can test on paper or on a computer at a test site, online at home, or at a Prometric center (grades 5–12), once per season and up to three times a school year. The ISEE is now run by E3n, the organization formed when ERB and EMA merged.

No. The essay is not scored, but the schools you choose receive a copy, so we practise planning and writing a clear response in 30 minutes.
No. Only correct answers count, so students should answer every question. We practise pacing so no section is left unfinished.
Check which test each school accepts. We tutor both, and a diagnostic on each shows where your child starts.
