The level follows the student's current grade: Elementary for grades 3–4, Middle for grades 5–7 and Upper for grades 8–11. Middle and Upper Level have a quantitative section of 50 questions in two 30-minute parts with no calculator, a reading section of 40 questions in 40 minutes, a verbal section of 60 questions (30 synonyms and 30 analogies) in 30 minutes, and an unscored experimental section, about 3 hours 10 minutes with breaks. The 25-minute writing sample is not scored but is sent to schools.
All levels can test on paper. Middle and Upper Level students can also test on a computer at a Prometric center or at home with remote proctoring (US and Canada). Scores include a scaled score for each section and a percentile that compares the student with others in the same grade. The SSAT is now run by E3n, formed when EMA and ERB merged.
