Know what comes next
The SHSAT is taken by NYC residents in 8th grade, or in 9th grade for the first time, who want a place at one of the eight Specialized High Schools that admit by test (LaGuardia uses auditions instead). It has two sections, English Language Arts and Mathematics, with 50 questions each, and students choose which to start with. Standard testing time is 180 minutes in total.
Students take the SHSAT on a DOE-provided computer at their own school or at a weekend testing site. From fall 2026 it is computer-adaptive: question difficulty adjusts to the student's earlier answers. The score reflects which questions were answered correctly and how hard they were, and the composite of the two sections is used to rank applicants.

Study resources
NYC residents in 8th grade, or in 9th grade for the first time, including students at public, private and parochial schools.
From fall 2026 question difficulty adjusts to how the student answers, so practice mixes easier and harder questions and builds steady accuracy rather than rushing.
Ideally in 7th grade or the summer before 8th grade, so there is time to strengthen math and reading before timed practice.
