Know what comes next
Students take the Smarter Balanced tests in English language arts and math in grades 3 to 8 and grade 11. The tests are computer-adaptive, so questions adjust to the student's earlier answers, and each includes a performance task. Paper tests are available by special request.
The California Science Test (CAST) is taken in grades 5 and 8 and once in high school, in grade 10, 11 or 12. It is computer-based and includes performance tasks. Since 2025–26, results use new labels: Level 4 Advanced, Level 3 Proficient, Level 2 Developing and Level 1 Minimal. They replace Standard Exceeded, Met, Nearly Met and Not Met; the scores and cut points did not change.

Study resources
Smarter Balanced ELA and math in grades 3 to 8 and 11, and the CAST science test in grades 5 and 8 and once in high school.
It is a longer, multi-part task within the test. We practise planning the steps and showing the reasoning, so students are not rushed at the end.
Since 2025–26 the levels are called Advanced, Proficient, Developing and Minimal. Only the names changed; the scores and cut points stayed the same.
