The Keystone Exams are end-of-course tests in Algebra I, Literature and Biology. Scores run from 1200 to 1800, and Proficient starts at 1500; the four levels are Advanced, Proficient, Basic and Below Basic. The Keystones are one part of the state graduation requirement. Pennsylvania's Pathways to Graduation (Act 158) let students graduate without Keystone proficiency, for example with a composite score across all three exams that includes at least one Proficient and no result below Basic.
The PSSA covers English language arts and math in grades 3 to 8, plus science, and uses the same four levels. Pennsylvania has been moving all state tests online, with paper kept for students who need it as an accommodation.
