Know what comes next
Students in grades 3 to 8 take math and reading language arts, with science in grades 5 and 8 and social studies in grade 8. In high school, end-of-course (EOC) exams cover Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology and U.S. History. STAAR is taken mainly online, with paper, large print and braille for eligible students. Masters, Meets and Approaches Grade Level are passing results; Did Not Meet Grade Level is not.
To graduate, students generally need Approaches Grade Level or above on all five EOCs; substitute tests and individual graduation committees are other routes. House Bill 8 replaces STAAR from 2027–28 with shorter tests at the beginning, middle and end of the year, and the English II EOC ends that year as a test and as a graduation requirement. The Classes of 2026 and 2027 still need it.
